Iwan Effendi

Based in Yogyakarta, Indonesia’s cultural capital, Iwan Effendi (b. 1979) is one of the most highly acclaimed contemporary Indonesian artists of his generation. He has garnered international attention in recent years for his colourful visual style, which blends surreal imagery with stories taken from Indonesian folklore and history.

Effendi has had exhibitions in Mexico, USA, Europe and Asia. He has worked closely with the Esplanade, as well as the Malay Heritage Centre in Singapore. In 2009/2010, Effendi participated in the Biennale Jogja X, and held a six month long artist residency at the Asian Culture Council in New York, USA, where he researched about puppetry, visual and performance arts. In 2013, he was the Commissioned Artist for ArtJog 13. He is also the artistic director of Papermoon Puppet Theatre, which recently held an exhibition titled CIRCUS OF LIFE at the Esplanade in Singapore.
