Isabel and Alfredo Aquilizan at Gangwon International Biennale

18 Jan 2018

Isabel and Alfredo Aquilizan will be participating in the Gangwon International Biennale, previously known as the PyeongChang Biennale, in Chuncheon, South Korea. This year’s theme The Dictionary of Evil focuses on historical, political, and social issues that have taken place in the past 100 years, and the recovery of the value of being human. The biennale will take place in conjunction with the upcoming 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics, and will be the main event in its cultural programme.

The Aquilizans will be presenting a large-scale installation titled “Bounds: Project Another Country”, consisting of trucks, various domestic objects, rope and canvas. The work depicts two trucks from opposite directions colliding and coming to a stop. Within the continuous history of emigration and immigration, people have moved to avoid different types of conflicts, including ideological ones, and find harmony, solidarity, and peace in places that can accommodate them. The trucks, filled to the brim with objects and individual belongings, show the individual experiences of the artists. It continues the duo’s exploration on the narratives of place, settlement and disruption through visual signification of domestic objects such as suitcases.

The Gangwon International Biennale will be held from 3 February to 18 March 2018.
