Yavuz Gallery is proud to present works by Filipino contemporary artists: Juan Alcazaren, Neil Dela Cruz, Ayka Go, Yeo Kaa, Nilo Ilarde, Rhaz Oriente, and Alvin Villaruel at the 2022 edition of Art Fair Philippines. A Surface Catching Light examines and challenges the concept of colour and materiality as building blocks in each artist’s process and practice. It highlights their integral role in providing structure to an artwork and their function in relaying the artist’s vision to their viewers.
In it, we see how vivid colours are transformed from pigments to an image with Villaruel’s illusory transition of alternating line colour painting, or in Yeo Kaa’s world of bright and pastel imaginations. The interaction between materiality and images is exemplified in the works of Oriente, Go and Alcazaren; Oriente employs plastic to cover and wrap her painting adding a layer of dimension to it; Go blurs the line between her teared and crumpled paper references and her actual painting; and Alcazaren’s practice exhibits his mastery of combining any medium into multiple stunning variations. Lastly, we have dela Cruz who pushes paint not as mere pigment but an intrinsic element in creating his layers of abstraction, while Ilarde commands paint to create forms and define their object-hood in each of his works.
