Dean Cross’ Icarus, my Son at Goulburn Regional Art Gallery and Carriageworks

8 Jun 2021

We are pleased to announce Icarus, my Son, a two-part institutional exhibition by Australian-artist Dean Cross presented at Goulburn Regional Art Gallery and Carriageworks.

The semi-autobiographical exhibition takes inspiration from the ancient Greek tragedy of Icarus and Daedalus, and features new video, sculptural and installation work. Investigating ideas of home, ambition, cataclysm and loss, the immersive exhibition examines themes familiar to those in rural and remote communities who seek to expand their horizons.

Icarus, my Son was initiated by Goulburn Regional Art Gallery (Australia) as part of The Good Initiative, a biennial $20,000 award to living artists, which was awarded to Cross in 2020. Since 2019, Cross has been a resident artist at Carriageworks’ Clothing Store Studios (Australia). The exhibition is supported by the partnership between the two organisations.

Living and working in Sydney, Cross was born and raised on Ngunnawal/Ngambri Country and is of Worimi descent. The Goulburn presentation of Icarus, my Son is his first solo exhibition in the region where he spent his childhood; while the Carriageworks iteration will be a major solo institutional exhibition in Sydney, where he now resides.

The first iteration of Icarus, my Son was curated by Gina Mobayed and presented Goulburn Regional Art Gallery from 2 July to 28 August 2021, and the second iteration curated by Daniel Mudie Cunningham is held at Carriageworks from 17 November 2021 to 30 January 2022.

Cross is a multi-disciplinary artist primarily working across painting, sculpture, video and photography. His artistic career began in contemporary dance, performing and choreographing nationally and internationally for over a decade with Australia’s leading dance companies. Following that, Cross re-trained as a visual artist, graduating with a Bachelor of Visual Arts from Sydney College of the Arts, and First Class Honours from the Australian National University, School of Art and Design. He has shown his work extensively across Australia at galleries and museums including Art Gallery of South Australia, UNSW Galleries, Australian Centre of Photography, Artspace Sydney, Perth Institute of Contemporary Art, and Alaska Projects. His work is collected by both public and private collections including: Art Gallery of South Australia; National Gallery of Victoria (Australia); and The Queensland University of Technology Art Museum (Australia). Cross was awarded The Good Initiative, Goulburn Regional Art Gallery (2020); the School of Art and Design Drawing Prize, Australian National University (2017); the M16 Artspace Drawing Prize (2016); and Highly Commended, Macquarie Emerging Arts Prize (2015). Cross is a current resident of The Clothing Store Artist Studios, Carriageworks and has completed residencies with the 4A Beijing Studio Program, 4A Centre for Contemporary Asian Art (Australia); and Canberra Contemporary Art Space (Australia).
