Disparate Bodies

1 Dec 2018 - 6 Jan 2019

Featured artists: Agus Suwage, BenCab, Isabel & Alfredo Aquilizan, J. Ariadhitya Pramuhendra, Mella Jaarsma, Pinaree Sanpitak

Yavuz Gallery is thrilled to present Disparate Bodies, a group exhibition featuring internationally acclaimed Southeast Asian artists: Agus Suwage, Mella Jaarsma, and J. Ariadhitya Pramuhendra from Indonesia; Pinaree Sanpitak from Thailand; BenCab and Isabel and Alfredo Aquilizan from the Philippines.

The exhibition revolves around conceptions of the Body – through its relation to being human, ideas of reassessing the self and identity, and the implications arising from displacement and dispersed presence.

Agus and Pramuhendra present large-scale works that reflect upon the philosophical Self, through self-portraits and paintings that examine human mortality and identity in relation to contemporary Indonesian society. In a similar vein, Mella’s work comments on social-political issues in Indonesia, but on discrimination and racialism vis-à-vis the human body. Pinaree’s paintings express the powerful and tender experience of the female body, whilst Isabel and Alfredo Aquilizan explore community ties and displacement between groups and bodies of people through commonly found materials.

In celebration of the opening of Disparate Bodies, Mella will be presenting “The Pecking Order”, an hour and a half long performance at the gallery.
